Morning Sickness Remedies (for pregnancy)

January 11, 2020 by Jenni Madsen 2 Comments

HOW TO STOP THROWING UP IN THE FIRST TRIMESTER

This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosure at the bottom of the page.

Have you experienced leaning over the toilet, praying you won’t barf only to realize it’s inevitable? Finally barfing and then having to either go to work, look after other kids or just go about your day?

Yeah, morning sickness isn’t that fun.

Morning sickness, or nausea in pregnancy, can occur at any time of day at any stage of pregnancy. However, it typically lasts during the first trimester. Morning sickness symptoms are:

  • nausea but not always vomiting
  • if you are vomiting, it doesn’t cause dehydration
  • usually dissipates by 12-14 weeks

Hyperemesis gravidarum is a whole different ball game than morning sickness. HG doesn’t allow you to keep food or liquids down and can cause dehydration. Hyperemesis gravidarum symptoms are:

  • constant nausea
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting 3 or more times per day
  • feeling dizzy
  • losing more than 10 pounds

RELATED: Positive Pregnancy Test (here are the first 10 things you should do.)

Remedies for easing morning sickness:

GINGER

Ginger is first on the list because although they aren’t exactly sure how gingerols effect our digestive symptoms, they think it has something to do with the obstruction of the serotonin receptors in your gut which cause the nauseated feeling.

I loved using ginger in all three of my pregnancies. It’s tasty, easily accessible and totally safe for pregnancy! Here are my favorite ways to use ginger to treat morning sickness:

  • Ginger Chimes candies are amazing for on the go.
  • Homemade ginger tea- sliced fresh ginger, squeeze of fresh lemon and teaspoon of sweetener, steeped for 5-10 minutes in boiling water.
  • Ginger Ale- check out the recipe here. All I did was half the recipe, store in the fridge and add a tbsp or so to a glass with club soda when I needed it.
  • Ginger Tea Bags
  • Ginger Gravol– this is safe for pregnant women but always consult your physician.

ACUPRESSURE

Acupressure is an Eastern medicine practice used to open blocked energy pathways in the body. The P6 point (which can reduce nausea) is in line with your middle finger on the inner side of your arm. According to HealthLink, there is no harm in trying this during pregnancy so try it as much as you like!

If you get sick of constantly pushing on you arm, check out these Sea-Bands! They were originally made for combating sea sickness but people quickly figured out that they are a great morning sickness remedy.

LET IT OUT

Sometimes, it doesn’t help to prolong the inevitable. If your body needs to throw up, let it. Something that has really helped me when doing this is to actually think alright, I’m ready, I surrender.

And breathe in to the nausea until I throw up. Accepting that it will happen makes it so much easier than fighting against it.

CRACKERS

This is something I did every pregnancy- kept a big old box of plain saltines on the nightstand. Even before getting out of bed, slowly eating a cracker or two did WONDERS for the nausea. It helps to soothe your empty stomach before you are bombarded with thoughts, smells and looking at food.

SUPPLEMENT WITH VITAMIN B6

Studies have shown that only moms who are already low in B6 will notice an improvement with supplementing. But it doesn’t hurt to check if you fall into that category!

If you are worried about B6, try eating some B6 rich foods before supplementing:

  • bread
  • wholegrain cereal
  • brown rice
  • vegetables
  • soy beans
  • peanuts
  • potatoes

If you’d like to supplement, please make sure you are taking the correct dosage because overdosing can result in headaches, tingling, sleepiness and other side effects!

PREGGIE POPS

Preggie Pop Drops are helpful getting the morning sickness under control because of the citrus and sour components. Tons of awesome reviews on Amazon here!

RELATED: No Fluff Pregnancy Must Haves (for every trimester)

SIT DOWN AND PUT YOUR FEET UP

Slow down! It’s so easy to just brush things off in the first trimester because it doesn’t feel ‘real’ yet. Well, it IS real and you need to honor what your body is going through right now.

Sometimes the best thing is to just sit down and rest while your body experiences morning sickness. That new life inside you turns your world upside down from the moment it’s a tiny ball of cells till… well, until you die  ? But seriously, slow down and enjoy what you can.

CHANGE THE TIME YOU TAKE YOUR PRENATAL

Maybe this was just me, but I always thought that you get up and pop your vitamins for the day. And while that may be okay when you’re not pregnant, Lord help you if you are.

Your stomach is just a little bit more tender when you are growing a baby so taking your prenatal in the afternoon or evening is a GAME CHANGER.

I was throwing up my prenatal every morning with my first baby for almost 2 weeks before someone dropped that wisdom bomb on me (THANK YOU WHOEVER YOU WERE!)

ESSENTIAL OILS FOR MORNING SICKNESS

Essential oils can be diffused using a diffuser, by steam inhalation or applied on your skin with a carrier oil. A diffuser seems to be the easiest because you throw a few drops in with water, press a button and you’re good to go! Steam inhalation isn’t too bad either, you just boil some water, add a couple drops and lean your head over and inhale.

Here are the best essential oils for morning sickness:

(please always consult your physician before use)

  • Ginger  -ginger relieves digestive issues, nausea being one of those!
  • Peppermint – peppermint has been used for centuries as a digestive and a higher concentration may help reduce nausea.
  • Lavender – reduces nausea if anxiety or pain is the cause.
  • Fennel – eases digestion and settles your stomach.
  • Lemon -reduces nausea if it is a digestive problem causing it.

PROTEIN

Eating a high protein diet during pregnancy can reduce nausea. Some high protein snacks you can eat throughout the day are:

  • Hemp hearts sprinkled on coconut yoghurt
  • Chia seed pudding or added to a smoothie
  • Handful of nuts
  • Peanut butter and banana sandwich
  • Vegan protein powder in a smoothie
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Plant based protein bar
  • Trail mix
  • Edamame beans

EAT WHATEVER YOU CAN

Are you only able to eat completely plain noodles? Fruit? Potatoes and ketchup? If it’s salad like the lady above, I envy you. I was addicted to carrots when pregnant with my son, to the point my husband almost had an intervention because my fingertips had an orangey hue.

EAT IT!

Whatever you can keep down, eat it and don’t feel guilty about it. Your baby will take whatever they need and they will be fine. So take care of yourself and eat what you can.

This is why a prenatal vitamin is important though so do try to get that down!

Here are some tips for getting your prenatal vitamin down (and keeping it down) if you are having trouble.

EAT SMALL MEALS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Small meals or constantly snack. The nausea tends to be amplified on a completely empty stomach so keep something in there!

FLUIDS

Drinking fluids is super important if you have morning sickness because of dehydration! Make sure you are drinking water as soon as you’re up and throughout the day.

If you don’t love drinking water and want to add something to it, try making a big batch of herbal tea that’s safe for pregnancy, let it cool and drink it throughout the day.

These bottles are super cool because you can add whatever you want, fruits or herbs for a fresh and healthy alternative to juice or pop! Try sticking the insert with the fruit into the freezer for fruit ice cubes!

LEMONS

This study that was done in 2014 used lemon essential oil and had the pregnant women inhaling the scent. It significantly reduced their nausea!

Drop a few drops on a tissue and inhale or pour boiling water into a bowl, drop a few drops and inhale the steam.

If you are pregnant, chances are you will experience some degree of nausea, at some point in your pregnancy. It’s not fun but at the same time, you are growing a brand new human and a bit of nausea isn’t too bad ❤

Best Gifts For New Moms In The Hospital: Hospital Appropriate Gift Ideas

January 3, 2020 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

What are the best gifts for new moms in the hospital?

This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosure at the bottom of the page.

Being a brand new mom in the hospital is super intense, physically and emotionally. Never will there be another time where you feel quite like that.

The best gifts are ones that are easily taken home, useful to the new mom you’re buying for or offer some sort of keepsake she can treasure and remember.

Do You Bring A Gift When Visiting A New Baby And Mom?

IMO, YES!

But, not for the baby. The baby gets lots of gifts at the shower! These gifts are specifically for new mothers!

If anyone needs a special gift, it’s a mom who’s given birth. Seriously, get that woman a medal.

No, not a medal.

Chocolate, fruit, self care stuff or postpartum care items!

What Is A Good Gift For A New Mom?

The best gifts for mom (in the hospital) after delivery are ones that focus on HER and her new life.

She’ll be tired. She’ll be emotional. And hopefully, she’ll be feeling a lot of love toward her newborn baby!

Getting her something that celebrates what she’s been through, the new journey she’s on and her new baby is perfect!

Gifts For Mom In The Hospital After Delivery

Fruit!

Seriously, fresh delicious fruit is the BEST after you’ve given birth! Hospital food isn’t great plus fruit has a high natural water content which is great for a new mom who may be dehydrated! You can grab her fresh fruit from the grocery store or bring an edible arrangement that’s a bit fancier.

Chocolate!

The food items are first on this list for a reason- there’s basically nothing else that compares to eating and drinking delicious food and drinks after you’ve completed the marathon of childbirth.

Milestone Stickers For Baby

These are so cute- you can stick them on a onesie or something that will be in the picture. They include all the month milestones plus ones like “I popped my first tooth, I sat up, I crawled, etc.”

Encouragement

This bracelet is everything!

Maybe she likes swearing, maybe she doesn’t. You know the mom you’re buying for so think that over!

Something To Treasure

This sculpture brings tears to my eyes. When I think back to having my first baby and being in the hospital, I would have been overjoyed to recieve this as a gift!

The new mama you’re buying a gift for- her whole life has dramatically changed. This sculpture is something she’ll look at for the rest of her life and remember the day a new heart was added to her family.

Or this may be more suited to her-

A Baby Bonding Bracelet

This bracelet is made of rose quartz and is thought to empower a loving bond between the wearer and those around her.

It’s also practical because it’s easily switched from wrist to wrist meaning that mom can switch the bracelet to remind herself which side she nursed the baby on last! (You think you’ll remember but when you’re sleep deprived you really don’t.)

Postpartum Uplifting Mood Tea

This is such a cute idea! An easy and fast way for a new mom to have a little pick me up.

Mommy’s Sippy Cup

Moms need sippy cups too, okay? Perfect for tea, coffee or other drinks! I normally don’t love the momma needs wine jokes but they are kinda funny if you don’t take it too seriously 🙂

Other Cute Mugs She May Like

Beautiful Personalized Necklace

You can include a birthstone along with the baby’s name engraved on the necklace. I love this idea because this is something that momma can give to her baby when they’re older!

Nursery Decor That Tugs On The Heart Strings

This is a printable from Etsy– you download the file and print it yourself. This would be incredibly endearing to put in a frame for her new baby’s nursery.

Sitz Bath Packets

These are AMAZING and she will thank you from the bottom of her- well- bottom!

This is my favorite brand because they come in nice biodegradable single use packets and there’s no worries of herbs floating around the tub.

A Self-Care Basket

There is nothing better than pampering yourself at home after your baby is born. It may take a few weeks to get there, but hopping in the tub and having a bath just for yourself with lovely soaps, bath bombs and body butter?

THE BEST.

Here are some ideas for gift baskets for new moms in the hospital!

Or this Relaxation Tea kit from David’s Tea!

A Teething Necklace

These necklaces are perfect for the stage that baby wants everything in their mouths. They look stylish and can dress up an outfit but they’re specifically made for a baby to munch on- meaning safe!

A Massager

Guess who had to run out for an emergency chiropractic appointment and leave a week old baby at home? This girl!

Adjusting to breastfeeding and carrying a baby can do terrible things to your neck and back. An electric massager is an amazing gift for a new momma (or papa!)

I hope you found a perfect hospital gift for the special new mom you’re buying for! Is there anything else you’d add to this list? Let me know in the comments!

12 (vegan) Snacks For Breastfeeding Moms

December 17, 2019 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

Breastfeeding is some seriously hard work. Did you know that exclusively breastfeeding can help you to burn 200-500 calories per day?

These snacks are protein rich and will help keep you full in throughout the intense days of breastfeeding!

This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosure at the bottom of the page.

NUTS

Nuts are chock full of protein, omega-3’s, unsaturated fats, fibre and vitamin E. They make a super easy to grab and eat snack, especially if you have your hands full with a baby (and/or other children!)

Almonds can also help get rid of a heachache, which is helpful if you are still avoiding tylenol while breastfeeding! These are by far our favorite kind to get as they are completely unsalted.

OATMEAL

Oatmeal can actually help increase your milk supply as well as being a nutritionally dense food. If you’re short on time, throw it in the microwave or add a 1/3 of a cup to your morning smoothie!

Overnight oats make an awesome option if you remember to do it the night before. Add equal parts liquid (almond milk, coconut milk) to equal parts oats with a tablespoon of sweetener and add toppings (fresh fruit, seeds, peanut butter).

APPLES AND PEANUT BUTTER

This makes such a good snack for mom and kids alike! Almond butter or seed butters can replace the peanut butter if you have an allergy. Apples have amazing benefits for your brain, including decreasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and to decrease decline associated with aging!

SMOOTHIES

green smoothie, simple easy vegan snacks for kids and toddlers

This is how I think of smoothies- You walk up to your metaphorical bank of health inside your body. You slam down a green smoothie and shout ‘I’m making a deposit for today and you can’t stop me!’

That’s what it’s like! You get one of those down and it’s a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals and nutrients so if you do that and forget to or just don’t end up eating too healthy for the rest of the day, at least you got that down ?

My absolute favorite, can’t mess up, tastes good every time green smoothie?

  • 1/2 C almond milk (or soy, cashew, coconut)
  • 1 small pear
  • frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 C spinach or kale
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla optional

HUMMUS WITH VEGGIES AND PITA BREAD

Hummus got so many vitamins! It’s crazy!

  • manganese
  • copper
  • folate
  • magnesium
  • phosphorous
  • iron
  • zinc
  • thiamine
  • b6
  • potassium

Plus it packs a punch of 7.9 grams of plant based protein per 100 grams. Now add all that together with some beautiful healthy veggies? You are winning the healthy breastfeeding game!

FRESH FRUIT

Fruit seems to be getting a bad rep for having too much sugar. It’s high time this myth was dispelled. Fruit is one of the healthiest things you can eat, providing light, clean energy with sugar that is extremely different from the processed crap you get in candy.

Fruits are rich in dietary fibre, potassium and vitamin C. They boost energy, contribute to heart health and help control blood sugar levels.

RELATED: DOES FRUIT HAVE TOO MUCH SUGAR?

SUPER SEED CRACKERS

This recipe is from Oh She Glows- all her recipes are amazing! Not gonna lie, this one ain’t quick. But once you make them, they’re easy to store or save in the freezer. And trust me, they are so worth it! Vegan and gluten-free, they contain sunflower seeds, oats, hemp hearts, raw pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and sesame seeds.

So, yeah.

A nutrition BOMB!

EDAMAME BEANS

Edamame are high in protein and they’re a complete protein source so they will keep you feeling full, perfect for a breastfeeding mom! They are chock full of vitamins and minerals and won’t raise your blood sugar.

They are super easy to steam, either on the stove or in the microwave. They are delicious with just a pinch of sea or pink himalayan salt crushed over top!

AVOCADO TOAST

avocado toast, snacks for vegan kids and toddlers, healthy, easy delicious

I know- everyone and their dog is talkin’ ’bout avocado toast. Well, there’s a reason for it!

It’s just so damn delicious and nutritious ?

Avocados are loaded with heart healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. They even contain more potassium than a banana! And they can help you absorb more nutrients from other plant food.

If you choose to do a whole grain or sprouted type of bread, this makes an incredibly nutrient dense food for breastfeeding moms!

Here’s my favorite way to eat avocado toast:

  • toast some bread
  • cut open an avocado
  • put about 1/4-1/2 of the avo on the toast and mash that shit with a fork!
  • squeeze some lemon
  • a pinch of salt
  • a dash of pepper
  • some fresh tomato slices
  • BAM!

CHIA SEED PUDDING

Chia seeds– they are tiny but fierce. Fiercely full of vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre! A 1oz serving contains:

  • Fiber: 11 grams.
  • Protein: 4 grams.
  • Fat: 9 grams (5 of which are omega-3s).
  • Calcium: 18% of the RDI.
  • Manganese: 30% of the RDI.
  • Magnesium: 30% of the RDI.
  • Phosphorus: 27% of the RDI.

They also contain a decent amount of zinc, vitamin B3 (niacin), potassium, vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B2.

All you need to do is mix:

  • 3/4 c almond milk
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp cacao (optional-for chocolate pudding)

Add to a container with a lid, shake well and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Then you can top with whatever you like!

NICE CREAM

Have you ever thought about why we take milk away from baby calves? It’s crazy that we are so protective of our own sweet babies, who we breastfeed and care for but then take the life giving milk meant for the baby calves. Cows are the same as us, they want to breastfeed their babies and care for them.

I never thought about it until I had my own baby and it really hit home-

Why are we exploiting a female body for her milk and/or eggs (in the case of chickens)?

So!

Why not choose to eat something that didn’t come from an exploited mother that is healthier and cruelty free?

Nice cream usually consists of a base of bananas, a sweetener (like maple syrup or agave), a splash of almond milk and then either other blended fruits or just by itself to make vanilla or chocolate!

Here’s a basic recipe:

  • 4 frozen bananas
  • 1/4 c almond milk
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2-1 tsp vanilla
  • optional: 2-4 tbsp cacao to make it chocolate

Blend in a high powered blender or a food processor!

RELATED: 8 VEGAN NICE CREAM RECIPES

FLUIDS

Did you know you need a whole extra quart (32oz) of fluids while breastfeeding? Of course water is the best option.

Some other options include:

  • Red Raspberry Leaf Tea (do you know the amazing benefits to this tea yet? I drink it from pregnancy through birth and beyond- find out why here!)
  • Herbal teas
  • Green juices
  • Golden Tea

RELATED: BREASTFEEDING TIPS FOR FIRST TIME MOMS

It’s so important to listen to your body while you are breastfeeding. Eat when you’re hungry, remind yourself to keep hydrated.

It’s so easy to just put the baby before anything else and all of sudden you realize you really haven’t eaten anything or had enough to drink all day!

Take care of yourself so you can take care of your baby ❤

Are there any other major snacks you’d add to this last? Did you try anything you hadn’t before? Let me know in the comments!

Do You Need A Breast Pump While Breastfeeding?

May 7, 2019 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

A big question new moms ask while still pregnant is-

Will I need a breast pump if I’m planning on breastfeeding?

And the answer is-

Maybe.

This guide will go over the different types available and why you may need one.

WHY WOULD YOU NEED A BREAST PUMP?

There are a few major ‘yes’s’ as to why you may actually need a breast pump!

  • If your baby is not able to breastfeed.
  • If your baby isn’t getting enough milk and you’d like to try to increase your milk supply with a pump.
  • If you will be separated regularly or returning to work.
  • If your baby is premature and too small to nurse properly.

WHY YOU WON’T NEED A BREAST PUMP

  • If you are planning on exclusively breastfeeding and won’t be leaving your baby occasionally for more than a few hours.
  • If breastfeeding is going well.
  • You may need to remove breastmilk but such a small amount that a pump is not necessary.

Something I wish I had known before having my first baby is that 6 months is not a long time, AT ALL. And by 6 months, your baby will most likely be starting on solids and your milk production will be regulated. So depending on your situation (how long your maternity leave is, if you’re a SAHM, or going back to work), by 6 months you’ll be able to go out even longer than a few hours no problem.

What I’m saying is-

Don’t make the mistake of buying an expensive electric pump if you are planning on going out for dinner, a movie or leaving your baby for an hour or two in the beginning. It’s not necessary!

RELATED: HOW TO BREASTFEED (TIPS FOR 1ST TIME MOMS)

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREAST PUMPS

HAND PUMP:

Hand pumps are exactly what they sound like- A pump that is worked by hand to express milk. Reasons for needing a hand breast pump are:

  • If you are planning to be away from your baby more than a few hours, a few times a week. It’s nice to have an easy way to pump some milk for the caregiver while you are gone, even it it’s just for peace of mind.
  • If you are going on a trip and don’t want to pack a heavy pump that takes up a lot of space.
  • If you are needing to pump but won’t have easy access of an outlet.
  • If you are wanting increase supply but don’t need the high cost electric pump to do so.

Hands down- the BEST hand pump is this one! It’s an insanely good price and has over 7000 positive ratings on Amazon. Moms LOVE this pump!

ELECTRIC PUMP

An electric pump uses a motor to mimic the way a baby would breastfeed to express milk into an attached bottle. Reasons for needing an electric pump are:

  • If you are returning to full-time (or part-time if it’s before 6 months) work where you will be away from your baby for long stretches.
  • If your baby is premature and not able to nurse properly, you may want to invest in a higher end pump to make sure you can keep your supply up so you can eventually start breastfeeding. Some hospitals have the option of renting a pump which can be easier on your budget.
  • If your baby is not able to nurse properly.
  • If you are having troubles with milk supply and would like to try to increase it.

HAND EXPRESSION

There are a few instances where you can use hand expression before buying a hand or electric pump. These would be:

  • To relieve engorgement at the beginning (be careful not to use this too often though, as expressing too much milk can actually increase your supply.)
  • To increase supply (gentle hand expression after a feed can stimulate more milk production.)
  • In an emergency, it’s always free and always available.
  • It can help treat plugged ducts or mastitis.

RELATED: HOW TO HAND EXPRESS AND STORE BREAST MILK

A lot of moms are told that it’s imperative that you have a breast pump while breastfeeding so you can take time away from your baby or give dad a chance to bond. You can absolutely take time away from your baby without needing to pump, even in the beginning and definitely by the time your baby is trying solids. Dad can absolutely bond with baby without feeding them from a bottle!
