The Best New Mom Hacks {tips for mommy and life with baby}

October 9, 2020 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

Life Hacks for New Moms

Becoming a mom is no easy feat. It takes courage and faith you didn’t even know you needed or had. But you do it and it makes you the person you are.

That isn’t to say you shouldn’t find out how to make your job easier- keep reading for the best new mom hacks:

Simplify

There are a million opinions, gadgets and pieces of well meaning advice that you’ll become aware of when you have a baby.

You don’t need to listen or use all of them. Trust your intuition.

Say “no”

It is not rude to say no to people coming over in the first week or two after baby is born. It’s not rude to say no to anyone, at any time if that’s what you need to say.

You’ll never get those first two weeks back. Soak up newborn snuggles and don’t worry about cleaning up so relatives can come and visit. They can wait 🙂

Make colds suck less

This is one life changing baby gadget I tell all new moms about- a nasal aspirator. When baby gets a cold and their nose is all stuffed up it’s hard for them to drink milk or just breathe.

A nasal aspirator removes all the snot from their nose. Best invention ever.

Use a vibrating chair

A vibrating chair is nice to have because then you don’t have to use your foot to jiggle baby to keep them happy.

A vibrating chair mimics the womb and makes for a happy baby.

Never buy diapers unless they’re on sale

There’s always a sale on diapers. Don’t be loyal to a certain brand if it means not getting a diaper sale. Diapers are expensive- save where you can! Kirkland diapers from Costco are awesome and not too expensive.

Hello Bello is also offering a promo right now- free shipping and $16 off their diaper bundle plus a free hand sanitizer. Get it here and use the code SAVE16.

Save your back at bath time

Baby bath tubs make sense… kind of. I used ours a couple times and thought “to heck with this!”

After that I just got into a shallow bath while holding my babies- they really liked that. Or if you don’t want to get in with them, use a Blooming Bath. They fit right in your sink and you won’t have to hurt your back bending over.

Use a “breastfeeding basket”

I absolutely loved doing this with my third baby and can’t believe I didn’t know about it sooner! Use a small basket, like this one, and pack with all the essentials you need for breastfeeding. It’s easy to carry around and then you won’t need to be trying to get up during a feed!

Things you can put in it:

  • Burp cloths
  • Water bottle
  • A few diapers
  • Wipes
  • Nipple cream
  • An extra onesie for baby
  • Granola bars

Get a free breast pump

You can sign up through your insurance to get a free breast pump! Check out the details here.

Create a postpartum care kit before baby arrives

Read over a postpartum checklist and then stash it all in a handy basket in the bathroom for after baby is born.

You can also make your own DIY padsicles and have them ready in the freezer.

Take as much stuff home from the hospital before you leave

Seriously, that’s what it’s there for! Ask for extra disposable maternity underwear and those giant pads… you’ll need them and they are life savers! Take a peri bottle too 🙂

Co-sleep for better sleep

I’m not a doctor. I cannot recommend you do anything unsafe with baby. This is just my experience:

Co-sleeping was the only way I got sleep after my babies were born. They slept in bed with me and I breastfed them sidelying so we didn’t have to wake up.

I was so anxious about listening for their breathing I couldn’t have them anywhere but beside me. This allowed me peace of mind and the ability to breastfeed without getting up, waking us both up and praying I could go back to sleep.

Use a white noise machine

A white noise machine might just be the best purchase you make. We STILL use ours for the kids and have had it for 6 years.

A white noise machine will help your baby sleep longer and allow you to sneak out easier because it covers up other noises.

Use a red light for nighttime feeds and changes

Putting a red light bulb or low light bulb in the room where you’ll be changing/feeding baby will help keep you both asleep. Regular light bulbs are very bright and might wake you or baby up too much to go back to sleep.

Get a wipes warmer for middle of the night changes

You might think an invention that keeps wipes warm is luxurious. You wouldn’t be wrong! It’s also dang near genius when you have a sleepy baby with a full diaper at 4:00 am and you’re desperate for sleep 🙂

Wear baby for hands free time

Wrapping your baby in a snuggly wrap so that they’re cozy, warm and can listen to your heart beat will help you get some free-ish time.

They’ll be calm and quieted by being so close to you and you’ll have two free hands for whatever you choose.

Use Cheerios instead of expensive baby puffs

Cheerios are a lot cheaper and have less ingredients than baby puffs- save your money and stick with Cheerios.

Get sleep any way possible

Don’t worry about starting “bad habits” with your baby. They’re babies. They aren’t out to manipulate you at 6 months old. They just want to be warm, fed and close to you. So get sleep however you can, just make sure you’re being safe. (No having baby fall asleep on top of you on the couch, they can roll off.)

Stock up on free baby stuff

There are a lot of ways to get free baby stuff– some companies have freebie boxes and others offer whole free products and you pay shipping.

Free Amazon welcome box– worth of $35

Free Target welcome box– worth $100

Free Wal-Mart welcome box– worth $40

Free goody bag from Buy Buy Baby– must pick up in store

Don’t let baby sleep in complete silence during the day

It’s easy to think you should keep absolute silence to help your baby sleep but in reality you might just be training them to wake up at the smallest amount of noise.

Vacuum, listen to music, have the TV or whatever you want to do while baby naps!

Stick to comfy clothing

The first weeks and months after you have a baby are kind of blur. Don’t put added stress on yourself by trying on pre pregnancy clothes. Stick to comfy leggings, loose tops and try not to stress.

There is time to get back to yourself and it will happen <3

Do not buy onesies with buttons

Friends, we need to find the person who is still making onesies with buttons and have a stern talk with them.

They are not practical. They may cause aneurisms. It’s crazy town.

Breastfeeding is a marathon, not a sprint

You will probably not win right away at breastfeeding with your first baby and maybe not even with subsequent babies.

It will be difficult, painful and sometimes lonely. But, the difficult parts become less difficult and the pain goes away as your body adjusts. Be gentle with yourself.

Fed is best, ALWAYS.

Don’t let anyone tell you different. Having your baby fed trumps the misery and despair of a baby not getting enough milk or a momma who is hanging by a thread trying to breastfeed.

I DO still think it’s important to TRY breastfeeding if you CAN. But at the end of the day, fed is best <3

Use a command hook on baby’s highchair

Grab a command hook and stick it on the back of the high chair as a place to hang bibs. This makes it easy to keep track of them!

Have diaper stations throughout the house

If you have multiple floors you use or just have a really giant house- have a couple (or more) places to change diapers. It’ll save you time and energy.

Cut nails during nap time

If the thought of cutting your newborns nails terrifies you- you’re not alone sister! Use naptime to trim those nails 🙂

Use a baby seat to shower

A baby seat is a safe place to set baby while you shower, prepare food, do the dishes or whatever else it is you’re up to.

This was one of my most used baby items, hands down.

Get groceries delivered or at least packaged for you

If you can get groceries delivered, DO IT! If you can order online and go pick up without leaving your car, DO IT!

Going to a grocery store with a new-ish baby is so. incredibly. stressful. Highly recommend avoiding that if you can!

Only switch to cloth diapers if you understand what you’re in for

You might save a bit of money by using cloth diapers and you’ll certainly keep a lot of disposables of the landfill but go in with your eyes open- it’s a lot of work. And a lot of laundry!

I love doing cloth diapers with my first and second baby. By the time our third came around, it just wasn’t making sense anymore with how time consuming it was.

Fitted sheets over the car seats

Place fitted sheets over the seats in your car BEFORE you install the car seat. Ah, kids. They are joyous, amazing and so sweet. They are also crud hunting dirt gremlins that will somehow multiply any food you give them and get crumbs everywhere 😂

Save your car seats with fitted sheets!

Use a backpack instead of a diaper bag

A backpack is way easier to carry around and it’s gentler on your back and shoulders than the traditional should cross diaper bag. They’re also a lot cheaper 🙂

Check in between baby’s fingers and toes

When you have your baby in a onesie all the time, stuff can find its way in between toes. Babies also like to clench their hands a lot so stuff collects there too- make sure to check during bath time!

My sister-in-law couldn’t figure out why her baby was so upset until they took her to the doctor and the doctor found a piece of hair wrapped around one of her toes cutting off the circulation!

Baking soda absorb smells

Baking soda is your friend! Place a small container of baking soda in an old yogurt container and poke holes in the lid. Place it at the bottom of your diaper pail or garbage bin to absorb smells. Add some essential oils to take it to the next level!

new mom hacks/ tips for newborns

No baby is sleeping through the night every night

We all have that ONE friend. Oh goodness, isn’t it amazing how she bounced back right away and her baby slept for TWELVE HOURS every night starting from 3 days old?

Lol.

But seriously- if you have a friend that brags about their baby sleeping through the night… it probably isn’t every night and it probably isn’t a full 12 hour chunk. Don’t worry about what other people’s babies are doing- you got this!

Backwards diapers

If your little stinker is starting to get interested in the diaper tabs and wants to get them off, start putting the diaper on backwards so they can’t reach them 🙂

No contact thermometer

Taking a babies temperature…. sucks. Especially when you have to keep it jammed under their armpit for 60 seconds and they’re not happy. I think it’s $20 for a no contact thermometer. Definitely worth the $20 when you can get a temperature reading in 1 second with no contact!

Cold air helps croup

It’s not fun but your baby may get croup at some point. This is when they get a barky seal like cough- it’s scary.

Definitely take them to the hospital if they are having trouble breathing but know that cold air can help if you’re in a pinch.

Muslin blankets are magic

A muslin blanket is big enough to be a swaddling blanket or receiving blanket. They’re also super absorbent making them good for messes, burp cloths or change pads. They’re good for almost anything!

Tummy time on your chest

Instead of putting baby on the floor for tummy time (which they probably won’t like) have them lay on your chest where they can look at you! You might even get a first smile that way <3

Get a LifeVac

Honestly, these are amazing devices. You can even use it on yourself if you are choking and home alone.

But for a baby or toddler who is choking and CPR isn’t working- these are literal life savers. They have a one way suction valve ensuring whatever is caught in baby’s throat doesn’t get pushed further down. They only expire after being used to save a life so you can have it on hand for years.

Calm colic in seconds

Shower curtain liner under highchair

Have an old shower curtain liner kicking around? Place it under your baby’s highchair during meal times to make clean up less painful.

Get a hobby

Even though babies are super time consuming, you might find yourself becoming kind of bored. Get into something that’s just for you!

Spend time by YOURSELF

Not with friends, not with your mom, not with your husband or kids. By yourself! You need that time and space. Don’t feel guilty about it- you cannot pour from an empty cup. Think of time by yourself as a gift to your family because you’ll come back more rested and confident.

Nobody knows your baby like you do

You’ll have a plethora of well meaning tips and advice from friends and relatives. That’s nice of them but they don’t know your baby. Only you do! So what seems to have worked for your friends kids might not work for yours and that’s just fine.

Trust in yourself.

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel

Having kids is not for the faint of heart. It’s mind bending how many emotions you’ll go through in a day. You might come face to face with a darker side of yourself that you didn’t even know existed. Kids push us to our limits… but they also cause exponential growth in so many ways <3 The years before age 5 are hard. That’s it. There is no magic button to make things easier but they WILL get easier as time goes on. Usually around age 3 is when things start feeling a little less intense.

I wish you all the best on your new momma journey. Please reach out in the comments and let us know where you’re at! Much love momma <3

Newborn Baby Hacks to Make Life Easier {helpful tips for first time parents}

September 13, 2020 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

Ultimate Newborn Baby Hacks

Having a baby is probably the most intense thing you’ll ever do. It’s life changing, chaotic and incredibly difficult. But there is so much joy in parenting too!

It’s all about finding a balance and making sure you or your significant other is more rested than the other when the going gets rough.

Use these super easy baby hacks to make life just a little bit less difficult as a new parent- let’s dive in!

Give medication the easy way

Does your baby need meds? Poke a small hole in the end of a pacifier and pour the medication in so they can suck it out of the soother. This will ensure baby gets all the meds they need! No sticky faces and half the medicine wasted.

Never buy diapers without a coupon

Never ever buy diapers without a coupon or making sure they’re on sale. There is always a sale on somewhere and it’s worth it when you’re going through diapers like crazy.

HelloBello is actually having an awesome sale- use the code SAVE16 for $16 off a diaper+wipes bundle plus free shipping!

There’s also a contest going on to win free Huggies diapers for a year- enter here!

Utilize your kitchen sink for bathtime

Baby bath tubs can be useful… but they are so hard to lug around, lean over and dump out. When you’re healing postpartum and bending/kneeling is especially hard, give your newborn a bath in your clean kitchen sink.

This invention is genius- fits in the sink perfectly!

Say goodbye to cradle cap

I remember being surprised at what was showing up on my new baby’s head in the first weeks/months of being home with her.

Luckily you can use coconut oil to get rid of it gently and easily.

Rub a layer of coconut oil on your baby’s scalp and leave it for 20 minutes. Gently scrape the cradle cap off with a cloth and then wash off.

Make baby colds less awful

Have you ever heard of a snot sucker? It’s a set of tubes so that you can suck excess snot out of your baby’s nose without it coming anywhere near your lips.

It sounds disgusting but it is truly a lifesaving product for when baby can’t breathe with a cold.

Swaddle bathing

Does your newborn hate bath time? Swaddle them up and gently remove one limb at a time. Wash and dry each limb seperately to reduce the time your baby is cold and uncomfortable!

Bounce fussy baby on an exercise ball

Did you use an exercise ball for inducing labor or helping yourself through labor?

Sit on it with your baby when they’re fussy- babies love to be bounced and rocked. Make it easier for yourself!

Use a wrap

Having a wrap for my newborn babies is in my top 5 baby products. Using a fabric wrap with a newborn is the easiest way to keep them close to you and have your hands free.

They can listen to your heartbeat and be calmed by your warm body temperature.

Protect Your Newborn’s Umbilical Cord

Worried about the diaper rubbing on your baby’s umbilical cord while it’s healing? You can fold the top of the diaper down so that it isn’t touching it OR you can fasten the diaper so that it completely covers it.

I always liked having the diaper covering it because it kind of keeps it in place.

Tummy time on your chest or belly

Put your baby on your chest or belly for tummy time if they’re getting fussy on the floor or blanket.

Newborn nightgowns for easy changing

These are genius inventions- no undoing a onesie, messing with buttons or a zipper or baby getting cold.

The nightgowns open at the bottom and make for a super easy diaper change!

Spatula for diaper cream

Use a small spatula or Baby Bum Brush for putting diaper cream on your baby’s bottom to save yourself goopy fingers.

Pee tent

Place one of these pee tents over your sons lower area to prevent mishaps during diaper changes! I can attest to the fact that there WILL be mishaps. I was shocked the first time an arc of pee shot across our couch… lol

Merconium hack

The first poops your baby will have are called merconium and will be incredibly sticky- use a bit of coconut oil on a wipe to gently help you remove it easily 🙂

Don’t throw out a diaper with a ripped tab

Don’t through out a diaper just because a tab rips! Use a band aid or painters tape to keep it closed for use.

DIY foaming baby wash with a foaming hand pump

Foaming baby wash is expensive- add some baby wash and water to an old foaming handsoap container to make your own DIY foaming baby wash!

Changing hack

Always, always, always place a new diaper under your baby’s bum during a change…. I can’t tell you how many times there was a full on poop right after removing a diaper. So much easier to clean up if it goes onto a diaper you can throw away! (you can totally use a receiving blanket or old cloth if you’d rather wash something than throw it away)

Save your shoulders

New parents/moms- diaper bags SUCK! I don’t know who invented them or why they are the standard for new parents.

They’re super awkard and hard to carry around. Get a regular backpack or a diaper backpack and save your shoulders.

Sleepers that zip

If a sleeper has buttons… just let it go. There is a special place in hell for whoever decided buttons made sense on a sleeper for a newborn with sleep deprived parents.

Gas drops

If your baby is fussy or colicky, don’t hesitate to use gas drops to help ease their discomfort!

Probiotics are another surprising gas aid and can help ease colic. When my son was born and had colic for the first 2 months, we tried EVERYTHING. The only thing that helped give him some relief were these probiotic drops.

Calm colic naturally

I used this with my son when he had colic- it WORKS!

Wipes warmer

Some people seem to think this is going overboard but I’m telling you when you are changing a new baby in the middle of the night, the absolute last thing you want to do is shock them awake with a cold wipe.

Is your sanity worth a wipe warmer? (pssst… the answer is yes)

Wait to change after a feed

Don’t change your baby immediately after a feed. Chances are, that food is going to go through them relatively quickly. Save yourself a diaper and wait until it does!

Soothers in tupperware

If you’re worried about your baby’s soother getting germs on it while you’re out, keep one stored in a tiny plastic container.

These soothers attached to stuffed animals are also super helpful because it’s harder for them to just fall to the floor.

Skip the baby puffs

Baby puffs are expensive- just use Cheerios instead!

Have a feeding/changing basket

I did this with my third baby and wow- game changer! I didn’t have to keep standing up and searching for random things after sitting down for a feed.

Use a basket and pack it with feeding supplies, a change of clothes, a few diapers and wipes. Carry it with you wherever you’re going in the house with baby to make for easy feeds and changes.

Never lose a bib again

Use a command hook on the back of the high chair to hang all your extra bibs- genius! Make sure you hang them right after laundry is done.

Keep track of meds with a chart

Either draw or print a small chart right on the medication bottle so you don’t forget. You think you’ll remember… but sleep deprivation is real. Have a column for the day and time.

Pack an extra shirt for yourself

Oh, all the times I wished for an extra shirt in the diaper bag. It’s a super good idea- breastfeeding and formula feeding can get messy!

Fitted sheets on car seats

If I could turn back time, this is the ONE THING I would 100% do- place fitted sheets over the car seats and put the baby car seats over top!

Kids/babies are messy. Food will fly. Mud will make its way in. The sheets will save you so much anguish.

Teething hacks

  • Dip a cloth in applesauce or even just water and freeze it for a super quick teether
  • Use a carrot or celery from the fridge (this works if your baby doesn’t have teeth and can’t get chunks off)
  • Put some water in the end of a soother and freeze it

Save diaper boxes

Use the old diaper boxes to fill with outgrown clothes- your baby will grow so fast and you’ll have lots of clothes to store or donate!

Use aluminum foil

Covering the windows with aluminum foil will create a black out effect. This is really important for sleeping babies! (and parents 🙂 )

Utilize baking soda to deodorize

If the diaper pail is starting to smell, sprinkle some baking soda in the bottom. Same with bottles that are smelling a little funky- add some baking soda and warm water and let them soak.

DIY travel case

Use an old wipes container to pack a couple of diapers, wipes and bum cream for a convienient travel case.

Catch food during meals

Use a a shower curtain liner to save your carpets or floors and catch food during meals for a super easy clean up.

No touch thermometer

If you’ve ever tried to take a baby’s, toddlers or even older child’s temperature… you know why a no touch thermometer is a must.

How can I stimulate my newborn?

How do you survive a baby in the first week?

The first week home with a baby really is about surviving, especially if it’s your first. Here the best ways to not only survive, but enjoy it:

  • DON’T HAVE ANY EXPECTATIONS.
  • Be easy on yourself and your partner.
  • Rest when possible and do not feel bad about not allowing people to visit.
  • Keep in mind that the only responsibility you have right now is taking care of yourself and baby. I put “yourself” first because you need to be okay in order to take care of baby.

Does it get easier with a newborn?

It certainly does. Your baby will grow quickly and be able to go longer between feeds and changes. That means less diapers and more sleep.

Your baby will also start understanding things and be more independent which means you can leave for longer periods of time when you need to.

Best Tips For Becoming A Calm Mom

May 12, 2020 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

1. DECIDE THAT YOUR CHILDREN COME FIRST- NO MATTER WHAT

This can be hard to do whether you work at home or not. It’s so easy to justify NOT putting them first when you look at the mountains of laundry or stacks of dishes covering the table. Or you have a million things to do for your job.

When you decide to put your children first and actively adhere to that decision, your day will be much calmer, I PROMISE YOU.

This means that no matter what you are doing, if they ask for something, just do it without a worry.

A snack, a glass of water, a butt wiped, even a story read. Just say, okay, be right there! And do it right then. Not in a few minutes, just a second honey, give me a sec.

One day they won’t need anything like that from you anymore. And it saves so much stress and frustration to just do it!

This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosure at the bottom of the page.

2. STOP WORRYING THAT THERE IS NOT ENOUGH/TOO MUCH TIME IN THE DAY

You are the source of time. This is based on the theory of ‘Einstein Time.’ Whether you think you don’t have enough time or the day is too frickin long, you’re right.

Start changing the way you think and talk about time. When you take a breath and assure yourself you have plenty of time for yourself, your kids and anything you need to do- you will have the time.

Have you ever noticed the sensation when you start panicking because you don’t have enough time?

For me, my stress levels go through the roof. I start barking orders and telling the kids to hurry up. Even if we don’t have anywhere to be! It could just be that I need to make lunch.

What about the sensation of boredom or time going too slowly?

This tends to happen to me after lunch, in the period before my husband gets home from work. I feel tired and sluggish and keep wondering how on earth I can make it through the day because I need a break.

3. VISUALIZE

Visualize how you want your day to go before it even starts. It sounds weird but it really, truly works.

Imagine yourself reacting calmly to situations that arise, showering your kids in love and kindness and not raising your voice.

You may still end up getting angry but because you have seen yourself reacting in a good way, you are more likely to do just that.

This also works at night after you have already gone through your day. If you had a bad one and weren’t very kind at some points or yelled too often, replay the day in your head the way you WANTED it to go.

Chances are, you will be more likely to act like that the next day.

4. TAKE A BREATH BEFORE YOU REACT

Easier said than done, Lord do I know. Every single time I’ve ever managed to do this- it’s worked wonders. Take a breath before you go in to a situation guns a’blazin and this should be enough time to get under control.

Don’t go in accusing your kids right away-

enter all situations with questions and curiosity. I have gone and yelled and my kids before even bothering to find out what was wrong and most of those times, they were trying to help/clean/fix something.

5. ALWAYS TRY TO FIX THINGS IF YOUR REACTION IS LESS THAN CALM

It’s going to happen. Sometimes multiple times a day. You lose your cool and you yell.

Never, EVER just say fuck it and not try to fix things.

Your kids will learn so much by seeing you lose your cool and then admitting you were wrong and you messed up.

And in turn, they will be willing to do the same when it inevitably happens to them.

6. STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO A HIGHLIGHT REEL

In our generation of social media, we have gotten used to seeing our friends and family and strangers highlights from their day/house/trips/etc.

So much that I think we are starting to think that our everyday lives should be kind of like a highlight reel. A beautiful clean home where you have magical times baking cookies with you and your kids staring lovingly into each other’s eyes.

Life isn’t like that. It’s messy, chaotic, emotional and sometimes hard to take.

Embrace that your life isn’t perfect, your reactions aren’t perfect, your kids aren’t perfect, YOU AREN’T PERFECT.

Embrace the shit out of that and stop worrying if everyday isn’t totally amazing.

7. START USING AFFIRMATIONS

Using affirmations throughout the day can completely change how you go about your days. Some affirmations you can try are:

  • I am kind
  • I am a good mother
  • I love my children
  • I am patient
  • I am loving
  • I love myself

8. START USING AFFORMATIONS

Okay, so most of us have heard of affirmations. What about afformations?

They turn around the questions we are always kind of saying to ourselves throughout the day.

So let’s say you have questions like this:

  • Why do I get so grumpy all the time?
  • Why do my kids fight all the time?
  • How am I going to get through the day?
  • Why do I always lose my shit?
  • Why can’t I lose weight?

Now, turn them around into something positive:

  • Why do I stay happy all the time?
  • Why do my kids get along so well?
  • How can I make this day even better?
  • Why do I always keep my cool?
  • Why do I lose weight so easily?

It’s gonna seem weird at first but what this is doing is tricking your brain into finding the answers to these questions. Your brain will go out of it’s way to find answers to these questions, whether they are good or bad.

So help your brain search for good things!

9. TURN OFF YOUR PHONE

Turning off your phone isn’t a penalty for you. It’s absolute FREEDOM.

You’re no longer at the beck and call of other people. You won’t have to go on a rollercoaster of emotions as you scroll through your social media feeds.

I have an alarm that goes off around the time I’m up for the day that just says ‘time to turn off your phone.’

I turn it off until lunch time or nap times.

You will be shocked at all the time you will magically seem to have when it’s not spent aimlessly on your phone.

It’s also easier to pay attention to your children.

Have you ever noticed you snap at your kids because of something you’re reading on your phone?

10. LET YOURSELF COME FIRST SOMETIMES

Because you can’t pour from an empty cup. Sometimes it’s necessary to put ourselves first in order to give the most we can to our children.

11. SAY YES MORE OFTEN

Have you ever caught yourself saying no (or shhhh) for what feels like the hundredth time for really no reason? It becomes a cycle that’s hard to break.

Try saying yes to as much as possible. Because, really, what’s the worst that could happen? You spend more time with your kids?

Seems silly right?

12. PICK UP BOOKS ON BETTERING YOURSELF

Who doesn’t love a great personal development book?

We all just want to be better versions of ourselves. Pick up a book that propels you fast and close to that version! This book was life changing- it taught me to take responsibility for everything in my life and gave me so much freedom.

Same with this one– it opened my eyes up to the fact that I’m in control of how I feel all the time. You can grab them free with a free 30 day trial of a Kindle membership!

13. GO TO BED EARLIER

This will make a huge difference in your day. When you go to bed earlier and get a good sleep, you will find it so much easier to be that calm momma.

14. EXERCISE

There are a multitude of reasons to exercise even though you are crazy busy with kids:

  • It brings on a rush of endorphins which can leave you feeling euphoric and way more chill with your kids.
  • You get to reconnect with yourself and check in with your body.
  • It increases libido which in turn can strengthen your relationship and make you happier.
  • Reduces injuries.

15. USE THE HALT QUESTION ON YOURSELF

Lol. I kinda laughed as I wrote this. Because the first time I had ever heard of this was specifically for kids but all I could think of was my self!

It stands for HUNGRY-ANGRY-LONELY-TIRED.

So, ask yourself, are you hungry, angry, lonely or tired? If you got a bingo, address that issue immediately! And get your kids in on it.

Sometimes I tell them ‘I’m so sorry guys. Mommy forgot to eat and that’s why I wasn’t being very patient or kind. Can you forgive me while we all eat a fun snack together?’

They love it! It gives us time to reconnect and giggle after I maybe wasn’t on my best behaviour.

16. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS AND REMEMBER WHAT’S IMPORTANT

Sometimes it helps to become a calmer mom simply by remembering how fortunate you are. We all complain about our kids and go through some intense days but try to remember the mothers who don’t have kids yet but desperately want them. Or the ones who are mothers to unborn children. We are truly blessed to have our kids.

You live in a safe place, you have food and water and your children are loved.

We are truly blessed, every single day just to be able to wake up with our kids and enjoy our day with them.

17. WHEN IT’S ALL GONE TO SHIT, RESET

This is huge. My kids even know this term by heart now, if it’s said, they know.

And they love the opportunity to turn things around.

This is what we do:

  • Gather in a circle and sit on the floor.
  • Hold hands.
  • Go around the circle and say two things we love about each person.
  • Hug it out.
  • Then you cry like a baby because you remember why you love your children so much.

Children have a hard time holding grudges. They live in the moment and love connecting with you. Try a reset and see how beautiful it is.

5 Tips For New Dads For After Baby Is Born

April 6, 2020 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

This is a guest post by Cameryn Vonbargen from Multitasking Motherhood. Here she shares her top tips for new dads after baby is born.

Having a baby is one of the most magical experiences a couple will encounter in their lifetime. There is a long list of things new parents must do to prepare for baby before delivery. They can become so busy that they forget to prepare for what life will be like after baby!

It is no surprise that new mothers will shoulder much of the responsibility in caring for baby after they arrive. What does that leave dad to do?

New dads can become jealous of the bond mom and baby develop quickly. Mom has already had months and months to bond with baby by growing him or her during pregnancy! Dad doesn’t have that opportunity to truly connect with baby before delivery.

Dads can also become lost in their new role and the unknown of where they belong in the family now.

It had always been just the two of you.

Now, mom only has time for baby.

Many people think of the postpartum time as being the hardest on mom. While it is no lie that it can be an isolating time for mom, it can be just as much so for dad!

We spend so much time focusing on new moms that we forget we also need to give postpartum tips for new dads!

When new parents don’t realize this, it can take a toll on their marriage! The needs of both mom and dad are pushed to the side because all efforts are placed on caring for the needs of baby.

It can be difficult to remain friends with your spouse in this time and enjoy your journey through parenthood together. Nothing will completely prepare a new parent for life with a newborn. However, there are things both parents can do to not only get through the first year with baby, but to thrive during it!

So, here are 10 tips to help new dads transition into parenthood and keep their marriage strong after baby!

Bottle Feed Baby

Whether you have decided to provide baby with breast milk or formula, dad can still have an active role in feeding baby! If mom finds that she is burnt out or exhausted from caring for baby, prepare a bottle with formula or pumped breast milk and give her a break.

Allowing mom a break will be huge for her! Learning how to be a mom is tiring. She is most likely living her life in 2-3 hour increments before having to feed baby again! This doesn’t even account for the numerous other activities she finds herself doing a day to care for this little one.

Any and all needs that mom has, are out the window.

By helping mom out, you both will enjoy parenting more. Plus, you will get quality time with baby!

By doing this for mom, you are showing her that you care about her and recognize how hard she is working to be the best mom she can be.

Participate In Bath Time

Like above, participating in bath time with baby helps mom out tremendously! It allows her a little bit of time to take a much-deserved break.

My husband typically gets home from work and goes straight to the bathroom to give our son his bath. This gives me enough time to sit down, relax, and eat some dinner before putting baby to bed!

It is one of the only meals that I get to eat by myself. While I love my son dearly, I enjoy every moment of it and I’m highly appreciative that my husband takes this time to help.

Adjust Any Expectations

You simply can’t have any expectations about how things will be when baby arrives.

Every parent dreams of the day that they will have their baby and what it will be like. I promise you that it will be everything and nothing like you imagined at the same time.

Whether it is the expectation of baby sleeping through the night or returning to your normal sex life as soon as mom is cleared, the expectation most likely won’t be met.

Baby’s needs must be met first. Let me tell you, they have their own schedule.

And their schedule means no schedule.

At least in the first few weeks of life, the demands of baby will outweigh any plans that you and mom have. You have to allow some flexibility in the beginning of your journey through parenthood. Expectations of baby or your partner are only going to get in the way of fostering a positive experience!

Communicate With Each Other

This is one of the most important tips for new dads and moms! There are numerous ways that you can communicate with your partner during this time that are crucial to maintaining the strength of your marriage.

First, make sure to check in with each other constantly. Things can change in the drop of a hat with a newborn. This is even more true when you add postpartum hormones on top of it all.

Both mom and dad are going to have needs and challenges that the other can help with. Staying connected and continuously checking in with one another will ensure that these needs and challenges are addressed!

Second, express your gratitude with any chance you get.

Simply saying thank you to your partner, even for the smallest things, will go a long way in communicating how important they are to you.

With both parents being tired from the continuous care and adjustments that come with baby, allowing time to express how important each of you are to the other is one of the most important ways to strengthen your marriage after baby!

RELATED: 8 Colic Remedies (that actually work!)

Remember Who Came First

Finally, the most important thing that you can do for your partner is to consistently remember who came first. That is, your spouse.

Your spouse was the first love of your life. You loved them long before the introduction of this little being into your lives.

While there is no love quite like the love of a parent, the love in a marriage is just as important.

Even though much of your time is now spent caring for baby, don’t forget that it is still important to make time for one another.

Don’t forget your first love.

Ultimately, there are great changes that come with being a parent. Both motherhood and fatherhood are unlike any other role you will have in life.

The first year of baby’s life can be overwhelming and new parents will often find themselves at a loss not only when it comes to baby’s care, but also their marriage. This is why there are so many tips for new dads and moms for after baby!

Before you know it, it will all be over. That is why it is as important as ever to work on strengthening your marriage so it is still standing in the end.

At one time, it was just the two of you. There will be another time when it is just the two of you.

Make your marriage a priority during this time. By doing so, you will be making your family a priority too.

Unmedicated Labor and Delivery: Best Tips For A Natural Birth

March 30, 2020 by Jenni Madsen Leave a Comment

Deep down, I think every woman secretly wants a natural birth, whether she’ll admit it or not.

There is something sacred, something wildly feminine about birthing a baby with no drugs.

I did birth a baby this way, although, not by choice. I wanted the epidural SO BADLY but it was my third baby and there just wasn’t time.

And now that it’s over and done with? I’m super proud I did it and got to experience it. It’s not as scary as you think.

Make sure you do prepare for all possible situations because you never know what might happen during your labor! Even if it scares you, read up on c-sections. Check out the facts on epidurals. And learn some seriously awesome natural birthing techniques that this list has to offer.

Don’t go in blindly!

This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosure at the bottom of the page.

TIPS FOR A NATURAL BIRTH:

KNOW YOUR ‘WHY’

Why do you want to have a natural birth? You need to have a strong why, a guiding star that you can feel deep inside you for when things get crazy.

And get crazy, they will.

So just saying ‘it would be cool to have unmedicated birth’ is probably not going to get you through the pain of childbirth.

Find a why that sends shivers down your spine when you whisper it to yourself.

RELATED: The No B.S. Truth About Postpartum Recovery

DON’T BE SET ON A NATURAL BIRTH

There are so many variables when it comes to giving birth. You may need to have a c-section. You might end up getting the epidural. You are NO LESS of a freaking amazing WOMAN for either happening.

So hope for, plan for, prepare for a natural birth.

But mentally prepare to just go with the flow and not beat yourself up whichever way that flow ultimately goes.

RELATED: Free Printable Birth Plan For New Moms

START PREPARING LONG BEFORE YOU GO INTO LABOR

Giving birth is kind of like a marathon. You can’t just show up on race day and run 26.2 miles. You gotta train and take it seriously. The same goes for birthing your baby. It may be long, it’s way more intense than a marathon and you need to be ready.

I am so guilty of NOT preparing.

With my first baby, I didn’t exercise and ate Mcdonald’s almost every single day. This is why I learned the importance of preparing!

With my second baby, I was running/lifting weights almost the whole pregnancy and eating a plant based diet.

The difference was night and day! Easier pregnancy, shorter labor, shorter pushing and WAY easier recovery.

You don’t need to go crazy and try to start a vigorous exercise routine and if you haven’t been very active, no worries! Check out some of these safe pregnancy exercises to ease into or find something that you love (and is safe!) to do for the rest of your pregnancy.

RELATED: Best Hospital Checklist For Birth Partners/Dads

RELAX YOUR MUSCLES

It seems counter-intuitive to relax your muscles when your body is going through the most intense muscle contractions it will ever go through, but-

Relaxing in labor will cause your body to work better.

Relaxing will also cause the hormones that help you cope and make your labor progress will release more readily.

RELATED: HOW TO RELAX DURING LABOR

READ INA MAY GASKIN’S GUIDE TO CHILDBIRTH

This book should be read by every woman who gives birth, regardless of wanting an epidural or not! For some reason, we all love to focus on ‘horror’ stories when it comes to birth. Ina May shows how childbirth is not only beautiful, it doesn’t have to be something to fear.

The positive stories in the beginning of the book will help to put your mind at ease. Do yourself a favor and get this book if you are at all frightened of giving birth!

CONSIDER A DOULA

Did you know that the word doula actually means women’s servant in Greek? Not that they have to wait on you hand and foot, but a doula is there to be your physical, emotional and spiritual support. You can call them with questions right up until the big day and during labor they will coach you through.

This study actually shows that having a doula reduces the cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25% and the requests for an epidural by 60%!

SPEND EARLY LABOR AT HOME

If this is your first baby, it can be be so freaking confusing as to what early labor is and what it feels like! With my first baby, my water broke (barely) and we went into the hospital WAY too early. I wasn’t even having contractions! They kept having to test to see if my water even did break (I was like- yeah, no, dude, I didn’t pee myself thanks.) When they did find out it had, indeed, broken, I was induced because I was Group B positive.

Had I known what I know now, I would’ve stayed at home and had labor progress naturally.

If you can talk through your contractions- don’t head in quite yet. Early labor can last as long as a day or two, start and then stop.

When contractions are regular and strong and 4-5 minutes apart, coming for 1-2 hours- call your doctor. If this isn’t your first pregnancy, call when contractions are 10-15 minutes apart!

Conserve your energy, eat light snacks and meals and try to relax as much as possible before you start going into active labor.

RELATED: Signs Labor Is 24-48 Hours Away

USE WATER

A warm bath or shower can do wonders for helping you through intense contractions. If you are at the hospital, request a warm birthing tub to try to relax in.

Communicate this to your birthing partner or doula beforehand in case you forget in the throes of labor.

KEEP A POSITIVE MINDSET

No matter what happens- at the end of it all, you get to meet your beautiful baby.

And there IS an end.

It can be really hard to keep that in mind when the contractions are coming fast and strong, you’re not just tired- you’re completely wiped out  and no one is telling you to “push” yet.

RELATED: Signs Of Approaching Labor

TAKE IT 60 SECONDS AT A TIME

Is anyone else obsessed with 21 Day Fix?

“You can do anything for 60 seconds!”

I love that because it’s so true! Take the time between contractions to gear up for the next contraction which will last about 60 seconds.

If you can try to keep it in mind, it may be easier to get through the contractions.

USE AROMATHERAPY

Essential oils have been used for hundreds of years for all sorts of things, childbirth being one of them.

Evidence Based Birth looked into some studies and broke down the most beneficial oils by these categories-

Lower Pain Scores:

  • Lavender
  • Citrus
  • Jasmine
  • Salvia
  • Rose, Geranium Rose and Rose Plant

Reduced Anxiety/Stress:

  • Rose Plant
  • Geranium
  • Sweet Orange Peel
  • Bitter Orange
  • Lavender

Decreased Length of Labor:

  • Salvia

Decreased Nausea and Vomiting:

  • Peppermint

Clary Sage essential oil has also been used to calm yourself down and increase the intensity of contractions, shortening the labor process. I use it every single pregnancy once I’m past 37 weeks to try to induce labor and stimulate contractions.

It works to either drop a couple drops on a cotton ball and inhale or mix some in a carrier oil and rub directly on your belly.

RESEARCH BREATHING TECHNIQUES

Breathing is so so important but you won’t realize until labor is happening just how important it is. Having some breathing techniques down helps you to:

  • Feel in control
  • Get more oxygen to your baby and muscles
  • Remain more calm
  • Respond more positively to the pain

You can learn about patterned breathing here.

Mother Rising has a step by step technique you can practice while holding an ice cube, you can find that here.

ASK FOR A MASSAGE

If you have a doula, she will know certain techniques to use during labor. You can ask it of your birth partner as well. Watch some videos together and practice before the big day!

CHANGE POSITIONS

Changing positions during labor can actually make you more comfortable and the contractions bearable. The positions you can try are:

  • Walking/standing
  • Sitting upright
  • Semi sitting
  • Using a birthing ball
  • Kneeling
  • Side lying
  • Squatting

Click here for printable PDF’s of these positions with more info!

STAY PRESENT

I know, you want to get away so badly. How could you want to stay present for the worst pain of your life?

It will help so much to stay where you are, in the minute that you are in. Wishing for it to end will only make it worse because you will start yearning for it to end and it will become unbearable.

Stay present, stay focused on where you are at.

LEARN HOW TO SQUAT

Squatting is so beneficial during labor. Not only can it reduce the pain of contractions, it can open your pelvis and use gravity to coax your baby down the birth canal.

This study shows that even though squatting for delivery can be beneficial, you do need to use a proper proper birthing chair for perineal support.

Having a natural birth is something that, frankly, scared the shit out of me. After having done it, I can sincerely tell you that although it is the most intense thing you’ll ever do, it is not something to fear. You will get to experience a side of yourself that would never have seen the light of day. You will get to go primal. Embrace that primal side and make it birth a baby for you! You got this❤

Trust yourself, research and above all else, know that it’s okay if a natural birth doesn’t work out for you. So many of us mommas start out ALREADY feeling guilty, even before we’ve brought our new baby home. Hell, the moment we see the second line on the pregnancy test! Let the guilt go. Whether you have a natural birth, an epidural or a c-section, just know that you did it ❤

The Best Work At Home Mom Schedule (with productivity tips from real work at home moms!)

March 26, 2020 by Jenni Madsen 2 Comments

Tips For A Work At Home Mom With Toddler

How do you be productive as a work at home mom with a toddler? Or a baby? It seems like it’s impossible but I’m telling you it is- IF you can change your perception of what equals being productive.

You will be interrupted. You will wonder if it’s worth it to even try-

It is!

But you need to be willing to put in the time to figure out what works for you and your kids. It may be a lot different than what works for us!

My NUMBER ONE TIP for working at home with kids is to HAVE A SCHEDULE.

This is the work at home mom schedule I try to follow on a day to day basis. Sometimes it works great, other times we have to adjust accordingly.

work at home mom schedule/work at home moms
Click here to download your work at home mom schedule

Let’s walk through the schedule so you can get a feel for what might work better for your work at home mom schedule:

7-9 Breakfast/Freeplay/Work

Usually we wake up, I get the kids breakfast and then we all do a quick clean up of dishes, sweeping, toys, whatever needs to be tidied up.

After this it’s about 8am and I let the kids freeplay while I work for an hour. Sometimes this works out nicely and they play without fighting too much.

Other times, they are grumpy and fighting so I let them play games on the iPad or watch an educational show.

RELATED: 7 Reasons To Be A Stay At Home Mom (plus 7 reasons not to)

9-10:30 Exercise/Learning/Outside

Getting the kids moving first thing in the morning is KEY. We discovered Cosmic Kids on Youtube and the kids love it! It’s adventure style yoga and absolutely free 🙂

Sometimes we go outside or go for a walk instead of yoga. After that’s over we try to do some sort of basic math, reading or online educational video.

If it works out, I will work from 10-11.

10:30 Snack Time!

The only way I’m able to work from 10-11 if if I have a snack ready to go that they can grab or I let them grab something themselves.

11-12 Learning/Craft

We do SIMPLE crafts and SIMPLE learning stuff- sometimes it’s glueing pom poms on a paper plate for craft and adding up all the windows and door knobs for math.

Sometimes it’s worksheets- I discovered a bunch of free printable worksheets from Planes and Balloons– my kids LOVE these!

RELATED: 21 Toddler Activities (to keep mom from going nuts)

12-1 Lunchtime/Clean Up

Integrating clean up into the schedule is so awesome- for you and your kids. If it’s on the schedule, my kids don’t balk (usually…) about clean up! They bring their dishes to the sink and know they have to tidy their rooms or toys while I tidy the kitchen.

That said- there are days where we don’t clean up. Someone is grumpy, the sun is beckoning or we just plain don’t feel like it. The schedule isn’t mean to be a confinement- it’s meant to free you and your time!

1-3 Freeplay/Nap Times/ Quiet Time

This is when we do naps for my youngest- my older two don’t sleep anymore (soooo sad.) So by this point, I’m fine with them watching a show, coloring, playing, whatever- as long as it’s quiet. And it’s a great time to sneak some work in!

RELATED: Sensory Activities For Toddlers

3 Snack Time!

3:30-5:30 Free Play Till Supper!

This really could mean anything depending on the weather- outside play, inside play, getting out the play doh- whatever works!

7-10 Kid Free Work Time!

This is kind of a joke… you have kids right? How’s your bedtime routine?

Ours can be smooth or a total shit show. It’s really a coin toss as to which way it will go. I still feed my youngest to sleep… I wish I didn’t but I do. Sometimes I am ‘putting her to sleep’ from 7-8. Then I sneak out. Then she wakes up again around 8 or 9. My husband and I take turns putting her back to sleep.

I’m just saying- working around kids can be tough. But that’s why you need to try to keep positive and work when you can! Even if she does wake up I still usually get an hour or 2 for working.

However-

I usually save mindless work for this time. I don’t know about you but I’m usually brain dead after a full day with 3 kids- go figure.

Tips For Working At Home From Real Work At Home Moms:

Work With The Rhythm Of Your Kids

Work with the rhythm of your kids. Young kids aren’t exactly known for being the most flexible creatures! You know your own kids best, what time of the day they (usually!) listen best, what time of the day they are more out of control and might need some supervised time in the backyard, etc.

You’re going to be distracted by your little ones, but if you work around their energy levels, it will go much smoother!

The Curious Frugal

Find Your Hours

Find your hours. Utilize your “golden hours” with kids. Make sure to connect fully with them when you are with them in their awake hours so they won’t feel the need to constantly interrupt when you’re trying to get them to independently play.

This Anxious Mum

Don’t Be Afraid Of Educational TV

Don’t be afraid to put on some educational TV for an hour or two per day when you really need to focus on work or have an important call. An educational will keep the kids sitting quietly and will teach them something in the meantime, so you don’t have to feel guilty about a little screen time.

Here are 12 educational shows that teach toddlers everything from math and language to nature, science, and feelings.

High Chair Chronicles

Break Down Your Tasks

Break your tasks and assignments down to smaller tasks, aiming for 10-20 minutes. Complete short tasks through the day, while caring for the kids. Save anything else for naptime/bedtime.

Living For The Sunshine

Have A Detailed Plan

Having a detailed plan of what I need to get done every day. Some days I find the time easily and sometimes it means I have to stay up after bedtime to get stuff done, but if I don’t have a plan and a checklist I don’t get enough done.

If I have to I’ll give my daughter projects, tv shows, or educational apps that she is able to do on her own so I can get what I need done.

I also find meal time to be gold – if I give her something to watch while she eats, she won’t need anything from me for a full hour sometimes.

Yum Vegan Lunch Ideas

Make Separate Checklists For Different Tasks

Make a separate checklist for different tasks that have multiple steps. That way if you walk away from your computer to take care of the kids, you know exactly where you left off when you return.

The Pay At Home Parent

Utilize Time Blocking, Naps and Early Mornings

Learning to be productive while my toddlers have a nap and by getting up earlier has made a huge difference.

I use time blocking by staying focused solely on one task instead of multitasking all day and feeling like I get nothing done has made a massive difference in my work at home life as a homestead blogger and mom of 2 little boys.

Wandering Hoof Ranch

Use A Bullet Journal To Time Block Your Day

Using a bullet journal helps me remember things without keeping them in my head. It makes it easier to plan out my day, and focus on one thing at a time while I work.

Time blocking is great for moms working from home with their small children. You can block each hour of your day with tasks that must get done to increase your productivity and maximize your precious time.

For it to work best, be sure to schedule in one on one time with your kids, making lunches and independent activities so you can get work done uninterrupted.

Well Ella

Change Your Priorities

One of the biggest things I have had to do with this new way of working from home is to change my priorities.

Before homeschooling, I was able to work at my leisure and also spend a lot of good quality time with my children. With that mindset, it’s easy to tell your children to wait “just one minute” while you finish a thought.

However, now that my primary role is as a teacher, not a worker or a playmate, I need to adjust the way that I think about my time.

Saving Talents

Make A List And Stay Accountable To It

My number one way to stay productive when working from home is having a list and using time blocking to stay accountable to that list.

Farm Girl Reformed

Stop Caring About When You Work

Not caring when I have to work – I’ve tried scheduling my time but the selfish little humans I live with have zero respect for my blocks – so I escape to work whenever I can get them settled into a task.

Often, I’ll sit at the table where I can see them faffing with kinetic sand or puzzles or just playing together and work while keeping an eye. Or when they’re asleep in the evening – or before they wake up in the morning.

But I don’t worry any more if I’m not getting anything done because I know I’ll find a pocket of time somewhere.

Laptops And Nap Times

Lower Your Expectations

Lower your expectations and work on tasks in SMALL chunks. You’re not going to get more than probably 20 minutes of uninterrupted time, so chunk your work that way, and you won’t feel like you’re getting nowhere, and get frustrated.

Make Attainable Goals (and don’t worry if they don’t work out)

Working when they’re sleeping. I get up early and also work during my toddler’s nap time. My 4 year old does a good job keeping himself occupied, so I can usually do some work while he plays and the toddler naps.

Oh, and after they go to bed since my husband usually has schoolwork to do then anyway.

I’m also ok with going slow because my family is my biggest priority right now. So I make attainable goals for myself and work diligently with the time I have, but I try not to get worked up if it goes slower than I’d like.

Mommy Knows Tech

Being A Work At Home Mom Is Never Going To Be Easy

Whether your kids are babies, toddlers or school age- being a work at home mom comes with challenges. It’s never going to be a breeze but I truly believe if you keep trying to figure out what works best for you and your kids you will be rewarded!

Let go of worrying about things that just add extra stress- like following a ruthlessly rigid schedule or trying to cram a million things in to your day.

Pare your to-do list down to the bare minimum so that you actually have a hope of accomplishing it. Work smarter, not harder.

Being ‘busy’ doesn’t equal being productive.

Honor how you are feeling- parenting in itself is such a hard and draining job. If you’re tired as hell and you know you’re just going to sit down and stare blankly at your computer screen- step away, even if it’s ‘work time.’

Learn to allow your days to flow intuitively (you can do this with a schedule!)
